  "income.exact_h": "How exact is it?",
"income.exact": "The yardstick is the World Inequality Database's pre-tax national income per adult: everyone aged 20 and over, couples counted as each receiving half of what the two earn, and income measured the way national accounts measure it. That includes money that never appears on a payslip, such as employer pension and social insurance contributions, the rent homeowners save by owning their home, and profits companies keep, so it runs above the income people report. By this measure the median adult in the United States has about US$52,800 a year, against US$47,000 median personal income in Census Bureau figures for 2025; in Canada about CA$65,000, against CA$46,300 in Statistics Canada figures for 2024. A salary from a payslip therefore ranks lower here than in a survey of earnings, often by 5 to 15 points in the middle of the range. The same measure is used for every country, so the world rank is fair between countries. Treat the result as a good estimate, not an audit.",
